2014-Mar-02 (20)The church celebrated its annual Canadian Black History Month following the Divine Liturgy on March 2, 2014. This year’s presentation was very special as it included the achievements of many African American and Canadian persons who have really transformed the world through their leadership and innovation. Deacon Augustine delivered a beautiful sermon during the Liturgy which encouraged everyone to call in the name of our Lord Jesus because He alone can break away the chains. The worship team shared a song with the congregation which was sung during the eradication of slavery from the United States and the fleeing of many persons to Canada. Deacon Tekle Samuel reminded the congregation that the saints of our church, St. Maurice & St. Verena, who lived in Upper Egypt, represented the African saints who witnessed to Christianity in Europe. Fr. Pishoy stressed that we should denounce any thought of discrimination or stereotyping which we may have acquired growing up and embrace the Canadian spirit of Unity in Diversity. This entails that, as a church, we should love all, respect all, and embrace all. We all cherish the contribution of every congregation member and in that spirit of unity we find our strength.
