Worship Ideas for Small Groups

I will bless the LORD at all times: His praise shall continually be in my mouth.
(Psalm 34:1)There should be some time in each small group meeting devoted to worship which can take many forms.  Consider asking each person to take turns being responsible for the worship segment of the meeting.  Here are some ideas to get you started.

Spiritual Tools

  • Bible-Read a psalm before prayer time (Example: Psalms 103; 113; 136; 145-150).
  • Memorize praise portions of Scripture (Example: Magnificat, Luke 1:46-56)
  • Agpeya-consider praying a portion together as a group.
  • Icons-meditating on icons and concentrating on the attributes of God revealed in the icon.

  • Make use of instrumental or song-leading gifts.
  • Sing Scripture songs.
  • Sing favourite praise songs.
  • Use tapes, records and albums by professional musicians (listen to a song and then meditate on it as a group).
  • Hymns-online resources for Coptic hymns
  • Have a hymn or song book with you at the small group.

  • Spend part of the time thanking God.
  • Spend part of sharing time discussing what you are learning about God’s nature and activity in the world.
  • Discuss ways you as a group can worship God.
  • Meditate on the attributes of God- For example, Go around the circle and ask each person to answer the question: “Who is God to you?”

  • Allow a moment of silence before prayer time to encourage people to “get in tune” with God.
  • Before prayer or prayer request, there should also be a “praise report.”
  • Set aside some time for the sole purpose of worshiping God.

Creative Ideas

  • Take a prayer walk and focus on God’s majesty in nature.
  • Paint or draw a passage of Scripture as you listen to music and then share with your group.
